I’m so excited that the Home Street Quilt is finally out in the world!
You can find the PDF pattern here and the paper pattern here!
The Home Street Quilt is a nod to how life has felt for me personally during the last two years.
When you’ve barely left your house for almost two years, your home becomes a part of you in a whole new way. Transitioning from cancer recovery and bed rest straight into pandemic lockdown, I lost sight of the world outside my four walls.
My home took on a deeper role as my shell and my armour and in a lot of ways a cocoon I longed to emerge from.
Home Street attempts to capture the fragmenting of my surroundings through this time within a quilt. The house in the bottom row feels at home surrounded by familiar shapes and formations, but no other houses appear. Community is still there, but it’s not recognizable in the ways we expect and yet we’re surrounded all the same (hopefully by the warmth of a quilt).
Maybe the meaning behind this quilt will resonate with you. Or maybe you will find a totally different meaning when you look at the design. Either way, I hope it will strike a special chord within you as well!
The Home Street Quilt Pattern is appropriate for quilters of all skill levels and is a fast finish!
Five sizes are included:
- Wall Hanging - 20” x 24”
- Baby - 40” x 48”
- Throw - 60” x 72”
- Twin - 75” x 90”
- Bed - 102” x 102”
And here are the fabric requirements!
The first version of Home Street that I made is this throw-size in purples, oranges and peaches! I picked these colours because it was autumn at the time and I knew how gorgeous it would look with the changing leaves!
I don’t quilt with these colours often, but I sure do love this combination!
The Kona Cotton colours I used were:
The backing is Moxie Floral in Neon Pink from the Primavera collection by Rifle Paper. I’ve had this fabric for a while and couldn’t find the perfect quilt for it...until this one!
The binding is also Kona Cotton in Raisin. I used the same colour as the background fabric to create a more seamless look.
I did 1-inch machine quilting and used Aurifil Light Blush (2420) on the top and of the quilt and 50wt Aurifil Thread in Natural White on the back!
Next up, I made another throw-size in all “classic” TBS greens...but with a twist! I’ve never used Green Tea in any of my green quilts before this one and I love how it turned out.
Here are links to all of the colours I used:
The backing is Tiny Tiles in Dove from the Clover collection by Alexia Abegg. This fabric is from quite a few years back and might be hard to find in stock anywhere!
I also used a striped Gingham Farm fabric by Riley Blake for the binding!
I hand quilted this one using 28wt Aurifil Thread in Muslin. I love that this colour isn’t white-white and it’s quickly become my new favourite! I did ¼ inch quilting around each shape in order to emphasize the different formations in the design.
I also made this cute baby quilt! I used:
Something I find really funny is how my green quilts have become the “classic” TBS quilts. When in fact, I use a combination of blues, peaches and purples just as often!
I mix it up and do a little bit of a different combination each time I use these colours. For example, the Teal Blue is a new addition for Home Street’s colourway!
Here are some more examples of me using similar colourways in past releases!
See what I mean? I use these colours a lot!
Okay, back to Home Street. For the backing, I used Domestic Charm in Birch from the Homebody collection by Maureen Cracknell for Art Gallery Fabrics and a ⅛ black and white stripe by Riley Blake for the binding.
I machine quilted this one using a staggered straight line, which ends up looking sort of like a pinstripe! I went out of my comfort zone a little bit and used 50wt Aurifil 2692 Black (Canadians click here) on the top of the quilt! Then I used 50wt Aurifil Light Sand 2000 (Canadians click here) for the back.
Then, I made ANOTHER throw using Christmas prints! With a December release date, I just couldn’t resist!
All of the fabrics are from Rifle Paper’s Holiday Classics Collection!
- Mistletoe in Red
- Partridge Metallic in Evergreen
- Fir Trees in Linen
- Holiday Lights Metallic in Cream
- Mistletoe in Evergreen
I sent this one off to Ma Tante to be longarm quilted using the cozy Cable Knit Pantograph!
Last but not least, I made this fun wall hanging! The Kona colours I used are:
- Caramel
- Curry
- Natural
- Peach (also used for the backing)
- Black (also used for the binding)
- Lt. Parfait
I decided to experiment and push myself with the quilting design. Making a wall hanging was the perfect opportunity to try something new - it’s small and low commitment, but still such a great way to learn!
I tried the design called “Radiating Continuous" from Jacquie Gering’s book called “Walk” (Canadians click here) and used 50wt Aurifil Thread in Natural White.
I felt VERY unsure about the quilting design about halfway through because it’s SO different than my normal straight lines - but I am very happy I continued because now I love it!
