I’ve been waiting for this day, and it’s finally here! I am delighted to introduce you to the Victoria Beach Quilt. This block-based HST pattern is perfect for some easy-breezy summer sewing!
You can find the PDF pattern here and the paper pattern here!
Let me tell you all about this quilt design and how it came to be.
Because I name my quilt patterns after places in Manitoba, I often get requests from locals. Sometimes it's the town where they grew up, somewhere they spent their summers or even just a funny sounding name – because yes, we have some of those here!
With that being said, Victoria Beach has to be one of the top most requested names! It’s situated just 30 km (18 miles) north of Grand Beach (another TBS pattern) along the shores of Lake Winnipeg.
You may notice some similar vibes between the Grand Beach and Victoria Beach patterns – because who doesn't LOVE quilt pattern BFFs?! I know I do! But also because… that was intentional!
I used the Grand Beach block as my starting point with the design. The Grand Beach quilt is filled with bold shapes and creative use of transparency, but also a lot of negative space. I knew that I wanted Victoria Beach to be the opposite – more maximalist than minimalist to create a nice balance between the two designs.
Second, I designed Grand Beach to feel like waves, sailboats and sand dunes. For Victoria Beach, I wanted to take that same essence by using similar shapes, but focus more on the community and cottage country that Victoria Beach is known for.
If you look closely, you may notice that the block is made up of four “house-like shapes” set in a pinwheel like design – this adds a feeling of flow.
The blocks are staggered from one column to the next to help add to the movement of the quilt – perhaps you get the sense of a warm summer breeze? Like I said at the beginning, this quilt is easy-breezy! See the Victoria Beach quilts literally blowing in the breeze here!
Both patterns are available in the shop individually, as well as a set of two with a special bundle price!
The Victoria Beach Quilt pattern is perfect if you’re looking for a quick sewing project for the summer! Or if you are just starting to dip your toes into the wonderful world of quilting, this pattern is for you!
As usual, I wanted to ensure there were lots of options! This pattern does not disappoint in that area. It comes in SIX different sizes:
- Baby - 36” x 36”
- Throw - 54” x 72”
- Large Throw - 72” x 72”
- Twin - 72” x 90”
- Queen - 90” x 90”
- King - 108” x 108”
And it includes instructions to make two unique colour layout variations – multi-colour and five-colour!
Here are the fabric requirements:
Last month was ALL about the Emerson Crossbody quilted bag… but I still managed to find tiny pockets of time to sit down at my sewing machine and make these Victoria Beach quilts! Read: early mornings, late nights and five- minute intervals between other work!
Here they are:
Victoria Beach Cover Quilt
I knew I needed to make the cover quilt with these colours because they are my absolute favourite combination right now! I also used it on the first Emerson Crossbody bag I made, which I obviously kept for myself!
This colour combo has a retro 90s/Patagonia/outdoorsy wear vibe, which I am all about – and always have been!
Also! In the traditional RYB colour model, green, purple and peachy-orange are all secondary colours. This allows them to provide excellent contrast to each other, while also balancing each other by representing the entire colour wheel – in the same way that red, yellow and blue do. Colour theory is so much fun for me!
Here are the Kona Cotton colours I used:
I chose Warp & Weft’s Moonglow in Palazzo Wolf as the backing and Kona Cotton in Thistle for the binding.
I gave this quilt the most special treatment by getting it longarmed by the FABULOUS Sylvia of Honeybee Quilt Studio using the Modern Curves panto. Doesn’t this panto 100% look like the ripples in the sand from the waves?!
I also could not believe how absolutely perfectly my new water bottle matched this quilt. Sylvia recommended this water bottle in a different colour in her newsletter…I was browsing the other colours and found this one. What choice did I have?! I LOVE IT.
Victoria Beach Five-Colour
This five-colour version is a nod to past quilts where I used one of my favourite classic colourways - all greens!
You’ll see that I used very similar colours for versions of the Grand Beach, Star Lake, Pine Falls, Birch Point, Riding Mountain and Birds Hill quilts.
Here are the Kona Cotton colours I used:
I chose Ruby Star Society’s Speckled in White Gold as the backing and Kona Cotton in Spruce for the binding.
I did straight line machine quilting for a pinstripe feel using 50wt Aurifil Thread in Muslin. The lines are spaced 1.5” and then 0.5” alternating, which is the same style of quilting I did on the Grand Beach Quilt!
Victoria Beach Warp & Weft
For this one, I chose fabrics from Warp & Weft’s Honey Collection by Alexia Marcelle Abegg for Ruby Star Society.
Let’s be honest, I think most of us can agree that it’s hard to go wrong with any collection of Warp & Weft! Whether it be the colour combinations, prints or just how incredibly soft it is… it’s an easy win!
The baby size Victoria Beach can be made with Fat Quarters, which was a perfect way to use the FQ bundle I had recently purchased! See me sewing in action here.
I chose Starry in Neon Pink by Alexia Marcelle Abegg for Ruby Star Society as both the backing and the binding.
I knew I wanted to add something extra special to this quilt and hand quilting is almost always the answer! I used 28wt Aurifil Thread in Muslin and simply followed all of the shapes that are created with this design a ¼” from the seams. This helps accentuate the overall design.
Below are some of the mockups I made while designing the pattern, but they didn’t quite make it to the cutting table!
