Let me introduce you to the latest TBS pattern, the Falcon Ridge Quilt! This design is a nod to outdoor adventures and 1990s nostalgia!
Featuring a block-based design, this pattern includes six sizes ranging from Baby up to King. With super-speedy strip piecing and a unique HST technique, Falcon Ridge is a delight to make... if I do say so myself!
The gorgeous ombré effect that you can achieve with this design makes the potential fabric combinations feel endless… perfect for making your own unique quilt (or 3, or 4).
You can find the PDF pattern here and the paper pattern here!
In true TBS fashion, this pattern’s name comes from a place here in Manitoba that is near and dear to me. Falcon Ridge is an “old-school” ski resort hidden in the woods of Whiteshell Provincial Park on the shores of Falcon Lake. It’s family-owned and operated and has the BEST retro vibes, making it one of my family’s favourite places to hang out in the wintertime. Think alpine and Nordic skiing, tubing, snowboarding, skating, snowshoeing, live music and good food… what more could you want?
I’ve always loved exploring the wilderness and I wanted this pattern to represent exactly that. It’s inspired by some of my favourite outdoorsy brands, with some TBS flair. The stripes or “ridges" (get it?) in the design are a representation of the sunrise and sunset. These colours create a radiating ombré effect, which is similar to how the lake reflects light at the bottom of the ski hill (or mountain block in the quilt).
To me, the mountain blocks represent an amusing (and perhaps admirable) characteristic of being a Manitoban. Our province is not known for its mountains… quite the opposite, as a prairie province. But we are known for being resourceful people and making the best of what’s given to us. If we need to ski down a big bunny hill and pretend it’s a mountain, we will do just that! And have the best time doing it.
This pattern includes six sizes ranging from Baby all the way up to King:
- Baby - 34” x 36”
- Small Throw - 51” x 72”
- Large Throw - 68” x 72”
- Twin - 68” x 90”
- Queen - 93.5” x 99”
- King - 102” x 108”

With super-speedy strip piecing and a unique (but beginner-friendly) HST technique, I breezed through making four Falcon Ridge sample quilts… and I want to make 100 more!
Falcon Ridge Cover Quilt
I chose this fun colour palette for a few reasons! I loved how they created a ‘sunset reflecting on the lake’ type of vibe.
Also, the 90s are my JAM! If there is ever an excuse to use colours that feel nostalgic to me, I will do it. Someone commented on Instagram that these colours reminded them of those bright-coloured disposable cups from the 90s with the swooshy/wave design… hopefully you know what I mean! I laughed so hard because it’s true!
I wanted to achieve a high-contrast design without using black or white. Using Navy and Ice Peach created the same kind of pop but with a slightly softer tone.
See the quilt top in the wild here.
Here are the Kona Cotton colours I used:
I chose Palazzo in the Sky from Alexia Marcelle Abegg’s Warp and Weft Moonglow collection for the backing and Kona Cotton in Windsor for the binding, which is the perfect colour between the Navy and Cadet in the quilt top.
Getting this Falcon Ridge Quilt back in the mail from Sylvia of Honeybee Quilt Studio felt like my birthday (which it definitely was not) and Christmas (which it also definitely was not) at the same time! See me opening up the exciting package here.
I decided to go with Vibrations by Mistletoe Quilting because it is such a good combination of the triangular peaks and rounded waves that inspired the pattern design.
I’m going to let you in on an embarrassing little secret. This quilt top has a slight error in it. All of the navy mountain blocks are sewn together backwards… OOPS!
Did I only realize said error once I was editing pictures and after I sent it off to Sylvia to longarm? Ummm… yes.
Did I let it get quilted with this error? Also yes.
Note: Sylvia graciously offered to try and fix it for me but it would have meant taking apart literally the entire quilt top… which would have been ridiculous!
But, c’est la vie! Plus, I’ve since heard from some people that they actually like this look better. Lucky for those of you who do… you can accomplish this same look with all of the same pieces and just a slightly different layout!
Classic TBS Greens
Next up, coming in HOT with this Falcon Ridge Quilt in a classic TBS colour palette. I swear, I will never grow tired of it!
See the quilt top up close here.
The Kona Cotton colours I chose are:
See this quilt living its best life in the wind here.
For the backing, I went with Ruby Star Society’s Herb Garden in Natural from the Achroma collection and Kona Spruce for the binding.
I hand-sewed the binding with a blanket stitch using 12wt Aurifil Thread in Black.
For the quilting, I did a curved, arched design… similar to what I did on the Summer Nights and Summer Lights Paint Lake Quilts.
I started with a small semicircle in the bottom left corner and then echoed that line across the quilt with 1” spacing. In keeping with some of my inspiration themes, I feel like it mimics a sunrise and/or sunset!
For thread, I used Aurifil 2021 (Natural White) on the top and Aurifil 2311 (Muslin) in the bobbin for the back of the quilt.
Fableism’s Forest Forage
What makes almost everything better? Fableism Supply Co… amiright?!
When I saw the gorgeous Forest Forage Collection from Fableism, I knew it was destined to become a Falcon Ridge Quilt. The collection has an amazing 1970s vibe with the tiny daisies, so I decided to go with colours that felt reminiscent of that era.
Ps. Does anyone else feel like they can’t help but draw parallels between ski hills and fondue, and fondue with the 1970s?
Here are the fabrics I went with:
I chose Woodland Creatures in Honey from Ruby Star Society’s Winterglow collection for the backing. Stay tuned for what I end up choosing as the binding… I’m thinking maybe pom poms?! How fun would that be!
For this one, I’m doing straight-line hand quilting using 12wt Aurifil Thread in Linen. I am SO pleased with how it‘s coming along so far!
Rainbow
You know me… I had to find a way to make a Falcon Ridge rainbow quilt!
