The Newly 'Spruced-Up' Spruce Woods Pattern

Spruce Woods is a quilt design that has always felt like a true reflection of me. When it was first featured on the RJR Fabrics What Shade Are You? blog, it gave me the chance to express my personality through a quilt in a deeply personal way. You can read a lot more about that and the original design on this blog post!

But here’s a little secret: Spruce Woods was the second pattern I ever released, and for a long time now, it hasn’t been my favourite. I liked it, but I didn’t love it, if that makes sense. I heard so many people tell me it was their all-time favourite, which left me feeling a little confused.

Then it finally clicked: it was the colour. The original palette on the cover is beautiful (I mean, orange is one of my favourite colours!), but it needed something more... more depth, more drama... to really make it come to life.

This was the main reason I decided to refresh the pattern with new updates and colours! And while I was at it, I added an additional bed size to fully round out what this pattern offers, giving you even more opportunities to bring your vision to life!

I chose colours that stayed true to the original quilt and design, while offering a new perspective. I especially love the deep background, which grounds the quilt and creates stunning contrast that makes the other colours really stand out!

Kona Cotton:

  • Curry
  • Spice
  • Ivy
  • Ice Peach
  • Pepper

I struggled to find the perfect backing for this quilt, and it ended up sitting in the WIP pile a bit longer than I’d like to admit. I searched locally, browsed online, and then it hit me! I hadn’t even looked at what I already had in my fabric stash.

BINGO! I found just enough of the super-soft Flicker in Pink from Warp & Weft by Alexia Marcelle Abegg for Ruby Star Society. I finished the quilt with hand stitched binding in Essex Yard-Dyed Linen - Licorice, which really pulled everything together.

If you’ve spent any time browsing quilts online, I’m sure you’ve seen plenty with organic, wavy quilting. I’ve tried it a few times recently and absolutely love the effect! Since it’s so easy to create a wood grain look, it couldn't be more perfect for the Spruce Woods quilt.

I chose 50wt Aurifil thread in Muslin (2311) for the piecing and quilting. Using my AcuFeed Open-Toe foot, I quilted across the quilt, gently moving it back and forth to create the wavy pattern. I used the width of the HSTs as a guide, stitching three lines within each one for a cohesive and balanced look.
